Small Scale Democracy in Greece
- Ancient Greece developed the idea of democracy in
villages and cities that were small enough to be
controlled by gatherings of all the citizens. The power
of oratory was the main weapon of the elite imposing
their will on the masses. Local councils are an attempt to
hang on to popular control of decisions, and are subject
to the same machinations of elites in their attempts to
defeat democratic control: corruption, old-boy
networks, freemasons etc...
